Hypatia of Alexandria was the first woman
astronomer and considered by many the first scientific women of history. Nonetheless
Hypatia got her way in science reaching a great public recognition at a time
when women had no access to knowledge. To do this she had to renounce marriage
and her more feminine side. In addition to devoting herself to astronomy she also
was dedicated to other disciplines such as philosophy, mathematics and music
surpassing even her father Theon. Hypatia was also the first woman devoted to
the study of mathematics even being considered the best mathematics of the
Greco-Roman world. Thus she made important contributions to society in which
she did not care for the religious dogma of that time -Christianity. Being her later
condemned to death because she was pagan. It is said about Hypatia "It was
the last pagan scientific of the ancient world and her death coincided with the
last years of the Roman Empire".
